Ritchey?s mission was to find the best racing prospect from a group of 89 Maryland-bred yearlings. This time he spent a soggy day in the horse show ring. After close inspection, he selected as grand champion a bay son of Louis Quatorze out of the Dehere mare Carna. The champion is owned by his breeder, Cary W. BALTIMORE, 06-03-06---Dismissed by the Pimlico crowd at 24-1, M K Stable?s Royal Descent got up in the drive to win the $75,000 Pearl Necklace Stakes for 3-year-old Maryland-bred fillies on the yielding turf. The race remained on the grass this afternoon, although three other races were switched to the main track. Five fillies scratched out of the Pearl Necklace before post time, leaving a field of five.

One Additional Horse Shows Clinical Signs of Equine Herpesvirus-1, Precautionary Measures Remain in Place, Situation Remains Isolated to One Barn
ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 7, 2005) ? Facility managers who are handling a neurologic equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) or ?rhino? incident at a Columbia, Md. horse stable reported today that one additional horse is showing clinical signs similar to those experienced by the five previously reported horses, including three that were euthanized.? The horse that is showing symptoms today is located in the same barn as the others and is currently being treated.? The two other horses in the same barn that were showing signs of illness are doing well. There remains no reason to believe that the virus has moved beyond the single barn.

April 5 Update on Equine Health Concern in Howard County
ANNAPOLIS, MD (April 5, 2005) - The Maryland Department of Agriculture has received a definitive diagnosis of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) or "rhino" as the cause of equine illness at the Columbia, Md. facility. The virus, which causes upper respiratory infection, can also cause neurological disease, which the three euthanized horses experienced. The two other horses in the same barn that were showing signs of illness are doing well and no additional horses are showing any abnormal symptoms. (more)

ANNAPOLIS, MD - March 28, 2005 - As part of its response to an equine health concern at a barn in Columbia, Md., the Maryland Department of Agriculture reports that the situation is stable and that every measure is being taken to determine the illness that caused three horses to be humanely euthanized. The incident is limited to a total of five horses, including those euthanized, that were housed in very close proximity to one another in one area of one barn. The two additional horses are being treated for various symptoms and are clinically stable. (more)

March 7, 2005, NY Times: By the end of 2004, Declan's Moon was clearly the best 2-year-old male in the nation. He had just completed a 4-for-4 season with a victory in the Hollywood Futurity on Dec. 18, beating the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Wilko. In the process, he clinched the Eclipse Award as the country's top 2-year-old colt or gelding. It was an impressive feat, but guaranteed nothing about his future. (more)
