Mission: BackStop is an aftercare account with the Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MHBA) that was created in order to support registered Maryland-bred horses when they transition to other careers.
How is BackStop funded? With every Maryland-bred registration fee, $25 goes to Backstop.
Who qualifies for BackStop assistance? Funding from BackStop will be considered based on funds available and a one-time application per horse. The funds are to be used as adjunct support for a specific use or aid to an individual or group that rescues, retrains, or rehomes registered Maryland-bred Thoroughbreds.
Who does NOT qualify for BackStop assistance? BackStop funds will not relieve or replace the responsibility of the owner, breeder, or trainer of the making of aftercare plans for their horses. Funds are not to be used for capital improvements or expenses that do not apply specifically to the horse that is named in the application. BackStop will not take the place of other funds or assistance received from TAA, TRF, TCA, Beyond The Wire, or any other aftercare programs in place.
Horses must be a registered Maryland-bred to qualify for this program. To confirm eligibility, applicants can check the Maryland-Bred Registry or call the MHBA office at 410-252-2100.
