The Maryland-Bred Race Fund program is administered by the Maryland Racing Commission with the assistance and advice of the Maryland Fund Advisory Committee. Under the direction of the commission, the actual implementation of the fund, including maintaining the Maryland-bred registry and computing and distributing all bonus awards, is performed by the MHBA.

Breeder and stallion award percentages are determined on a bi-annual basis by the Maryland Racing Commission. Owner and developer award percentages are determined by a separate agreement with the Horsemen's Purse Account. For races in Maryland only.

PAYOUT CHART

MARYLAND-BRED STEEPLECHASE AWARDS
Beginning in 2022, registered Maryland-bred horses that place first, second or third will receive a bonus on purses earned at National Steeplechase Association-sanctioned meets in Maryland. Modeled on the current bonuses paid to Maryland-breds that run at Laurel Park, Pimlico Race Course and Timonium, the steeplechase program includes:

  • A 30-percent bonus to the owner.
  • A 30-percent bonus to the breeder.
  • A 10-percent bonus to the stallion owner, if the horse is sired by a Maryland stallion.

The MHBA will pay these bonus awards for participants that qualify.

The five meets that qualify for this program this year are: My Lady’s Manor, Grand National, Maryland Hunt Cup, Fair Hill, and Legacy Chase at Shawan Downs. The bonus applies to NSA-sanctioned steeplechase and flat races with listed purses at Maryland meets. Bonuses will not apply to training flat races. This program is not part of the Maryland-bred Race Fund.
