The late Jim McKay, beloved by millions as the host of ABC’s “Wide World of Sports,” is the recipient of the 2017 Robert and Anne Heighe Award for Excellence in Equestrian Journalism. The award will be presented posthumously the evening of Friday, Nov. 10, at Harford Community College. “The Wider World of Jim McKay: Celebrating His Life and His Work” begins with the viewing of an exhibit on the broadcast journalist’s life starting at 5 p.m. A reception and award presentation will follow.

McKay is being honored with the Heighe Award for his years of coverage of horse racing and in particular the American “Triple Crown” series of horse races.

Blamed takes it all in the Royal Delta

Capping off a week in which she was named 2018 Maryland-bred champion 3-year-old filly, Cleber J. Massey’s Blamed put it all on the line and got her first win of 2019 by leading gate-to-wire in the $150,000 Royal Delta Stakes-G3 at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, Feb. 16. Las Setas gets first stakes win in Wide Country

Wayne A. Harrison, Robert T. Manfuso, and Katharine M. Voss’ Las Setas took command of the field from the start and pulled away to win the $100,000 Wide Country Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by five and a half lengths on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Laurel Park. She covered the seven furlongs in 1:22.99.
