Maryland Thoroughbred Industry Renaissance Awards - Maryland Horse Breeders Association

The second annual Maryland Thoroughbred Industry Renaissance Awards will be presented to the top Maryland owner, trainer, jockey, breeder, broodmare and stallion, as well as the champion Maryland-breds of 2018, on Feb. 12 at American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. The Renaissance Awards were created to recognize the best of Maryland racing and breeding from the previous year and are a cooperative effort between the Maryland Horse Breeders Association, Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and Maryland Jockey Club.


Invitations to the Renaissance Awards have recently been mailed, and tickets may be purchased in MarylandThoroughbred.com online store here. Ticket price is $150 per person. The Baltimore band Black Tie will provide music throughout the evening’s festivities and dancing after dinner.

Cordmaker excels in $100,000 Polynesian

Hillwood Stable’s Cordmaker closed the gap, punched through an opening at the top of the stretch and prevailed by a half-length in the $100,000 Polynesian Stakes over Maryland-bred stakes winner Clubman at Laurel Park on Sunday, June 16.

Two Maryland-breds sell for six-figures at June OBS Sale

Of the dozen Maryland-breds who went through the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s June Sale of Two-Year-Olds & Horses of Racing Age at the OBS Sales Grounds in Ocala, Fla., June 12-14, 10 sold, including two colts for six-figures in the final session. Hip 1051, a bay son of classic winner Shackleford and half-brother to stakes winner Safe Trip, sold for $145,000 to EQB, Inc., Patrice Miller, agent, from the consignment of Pick View LLC, Agent I. He was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Bayne Welker Jr. out of the Coronado's Quest mare Teruko.

2019 MHBA Board of Director election results

The Maryland Horse Breeders Association membership has selected three incumbent members, a former board member and a 2018 presidential appointee to the 2019 Board of Directors, as announced June 13. Dictated by MHBA bylaws, the annually held election fills five open seats on the board. Those elected this year will serve for the next three years. Incumbents Louis Merryman, Sabrina Moore and James B. Steele Jr. join Richard Blue Jr., who last served on the board in 2017, and Michael F. Horning.
