Seeking his first win in more than a year, Silhouette LLC’s Bowsprit turned in an impressive run down the stretch and fought to the wire to win by a neck over Son of Aponi in the $60,000 Maryland Million and/or Registered Maryland-Bred Turf Starter Handicap on Saturday, Oct. 19 on Jim McKay Maryland Million Day.

Settling into the middle of the full field of 14 for the first six furlongs, Bowsprit bided his time as early pacesetter Going to the Lead set soft opening fractions of :24.08 and :48.47. Turning for home, Bowsprit angled out and circled six-wide into the stretch before barreling down the center of the track to catch battling leaders Son of Aponi and No More Talk. The Milan Milosevic trainee grabbed command just before the wire, earning his first stakes win as he finished the mile and an eighth on the turf in 1:50.44.

Improving his record to 4-1-3 from 21 starts, the 5-year-old gelded son of Mast Track increased his earnings to $115,210.

Bred by Edmund T. Mudge IV, who races in the name of Silhouette LLC, Bowsprit launched his career at 2 with trainer Sonja Aleksic, attempted the Maryland Juvenile Futurity as a maiden, but had yet to win when transferred to Milosevic. His first victory came after a six-month layoff, in his second start at 3, when dropped in for a $20,000 tag in a mile and an eighth maiden claiming turf race at Laurel in July. Since then, he found victories in a starter race at Laurel and an allowance over Presque Isle Downs’ all weather track. Last December, he shipped to Woodbine for a graded stakes attempt in the Valedictory Stakes-G3 over the all-weather track but finished off the board. In his first five starts of 2019, he ran solely in allowance company, but was well beaten each time. Dropped in for $10,500 in a Laurel claimer in October (he was fifth, beaten just over two lengths) made him eligible for the Maryland Million Day starter race.

Bowsprit is the second foal produced by the Include mare Sassy Number, who was purchased by Mudge as a broodmare prospect for $12,000 out of the 2011 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed Sale. Sassy Number has produced four foals of racing age, and has two winners from three starters. She has produced colts by Imagining the past three years.
