Maryland-bred Smart Angle was bred by Mr. and Mrs. James P. Ryan of Ryehill Farm. She began her career in a maiden special weight at Belmont in July, and then reeled off three straight stakes scores in the Lucky Penny, the Adirondack and Spinaway. Following a third in the Astarita, the filly won the Matron, Frizette and Selima Stakes in succession. She concluded her 1979 season in November when second to Genuine risk by a nose, and earned the Eclipse Award and Maryland-bred Champion for Two-year-old filly.
