The Jockey Club released their Report of Mares Bred (RMB) statistics for the 2022 breeding season. Maryland ranked sixth among states and provinces, with 748 mares bred by 26 stallions.

Maryland stallions averaged 28.7 mares per book. Murmur Farm’s Blofeld led the way among Maryland stallions, covering 84 mares in 2022. Blofeld ranks eighth among Maryland stallions in 2022, with 25 winners with earnings of more than $1.5 million. He sired his first two stakes winners on Jim McKay Maryland Million day, when Johnyz From Albany won the Nursery and Chickieness took the Lassie.
 
Northview stallion Engage (71), Country Life stallion Divining Rod (64), and Northview stallions Irish War Cry (61) and Golden Lad (56) completed the Maryland top five. Maryland’s leading stallion, Northview’s Great Notion, covered 39 mares.
 
Based on RMBs received through Oct. 18, 2022, the Jockey Club reports that 925 stallions bred 27,163 mares in North America in 2022. It is estimated that an additional 2,500 to 3,500 mares will be reported as bred during the 2022 season.

Mavilus upsets Conniver

Thanks to a perfectly-timed ride by Laurel Park’s leading rider, Jaime Rodriguez, Mavilus mowed down her competition late and won the Conniver Stakes for Maryland-bred or Maryland-sired fillies and mares at Laurel Park on Saturday, March 18 in a 25-1 upset.
