It may have been just a maiden race, but Mindframe inspired racing fans to dream big with a dominant 13 3/4-length victory on the Florida Derby day undercard at Gulfstream Park March 30.

The dark bay or brown 3-year-old colt was one of four first-time starters in the field, but had received the most attention thanks to a series of impressive workouts at trainer Todd Pletcher's Palm Beach Downs base. Listed as the tepid 7-2 morning line favorite, he was bet early and often and went off as the 11-10 choice.

Breaking from post position six, Mindframe settled just off the early pace under Irad Ortiz Jr, rating in fourth, about two lengths off the lead, as early leaders Assertor and One Sharp Cookie passed the first quarter in a strong 21.92. As they rounded the far turn and moved past the opening half in 44.44, Ortiz asked Mindframe for run, and the response was devastating. He engaged the leaders with a quarter-mile to go and pulled clear in the stretch, opening up while being hand-ridden in the last sixteenth. The final time for seven furlongs on a fast track was 1:21.72, good for a Beyer Speed Figure of 103, the third-highest Beyer earned by a 3-year-old this year, trailing only stablemate Fierceness's 110 in the Florida Derby and Nysos's 105 in the Robert B. Lewis. It's also the highest Beyer earned by a first-time starter since Speed Boat Beach ran a 104 on debut at Del Mar in September 2022.

Mindframe is owned by Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable. He was purchased by his owners for $600,000 from the Betz Thoroughbreds consignment at the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He was bred by R. Larry Johnson, and is by Constitution out of Johnson's stakes-winning homebred mare Walk of Stars. Walk of Stars descends Mindframe's fourth dam Ran's Chick, purchased by Johnson for $2,400 at Timonium in 1978. Unraced due to bowed tendons, Ran's Chick became the foundation mare for Johnson's breeding operation.

Mindframe is the fourth winner from as many foals to race for Walk of Stars. Her other winners include Star of Shanghai (Shanghai Bobby), stakes-placed Hollywood Walk (Animal Kingdom), and Starstreet (Munnings). She also has a Maclean's Music 2-year-old named Lonesome Road. A mating to Audible for 2023 did not produce a foal; she is currently expecting a foal by Jack Christopher.
