Larry Johnson homebred Future Is Now lived up to her name on the Black-Eyed Susan day undercard Friday, May 17 at Pimlico, when she won the $100,000 The Very One Stakes by 2¼ lengths for her first stakes victory.

The 4-year-old daughter of Northview stallion Great Notion first announced her presence last Sept. 16 at Pimlico, when she led throughout to win a first-level allowance turf sprint by 4¾ lengths. Between that race and The Very One, she had won once in six starts, and was stakes placed when the runner-up in the March 10 Captiva Island Stakes at Gulfstream Park. She went off as the 13-10 favorite in the 10-horse The Very One field.

Future Is Now broke well from post position eight under Paco Lopez and worked out a great stalking trip, drafting in third behind pacesetters Shoshanah and 2023 Maryland-bred champion 3-year-old filly Bosserati. As they rounded the turn and entered the homestretch of the five-furlong dash, Lopez angled Future Is Now off the rail and she took off after Shoshanah. Future Is Now wrestled control in the last eighth and drew off to win, covering the distance over a firm grass course in :58.29. Fellow Johnson homebred Hollywood Walk rallied for third.

Future Is Now’s victory in The Very One improved her record to 4-1-0 in 10 starts, with earnings of $214,935. On the season, she’s 2-1-0 in five starts with $126,930 in earnings.

Future Is Now is descended from Johnson’s foundation mare Ran’s Chick, purchased at auction by Johnson for $2,400 in December 1978. Her dam, the Bernardini mare Past as Prelude, is a half-sibling to six winners, including stakes winner and stakes sire Street Magician.

From six foals, Past as Prelude has produced five starters and three winners, including Call Another Play (Audible), who won the Weber City Miss in April and finished third in the Black-Eyed Susan-G2 later in the card, and stakes-placed Continentalcongres (Constitution). Her most recent foal is a McKinzie 2-year-old named Places in My Past. She was bred back to Audible for 2024.
