Kerness K returned for his first start at Delaware Park since September 2024 with the Equibase Daily Insights note as the horse with "the longest active win streak (4) [in the nation], entered today [May 27]."
Morris E. Kernan Jr. and Jagger Inc.'s runner added to his streak, and is now in a tie for second as the winningest horse in the U.S. this year.
A 4-year-old son of Great Notion trained by Jamie Ness, Kerness K got his fifth win in a row with a nose victory (while carrying top weight of 125 pounds) in a five and a half-furlong starter race over a sealed sloppy track. Ridden by Paco Lopez, the gray gelding rode the rail behind the pacesetters early, was asked to go four-wide around the far turn, and took aim on the 3-5 favorite and veteran stakes winner Silver Slugger. Cutting into the lead down the stretch, Kerness K gradually reeled him in, and it came down to a head bob at the finish.
Kerness K's streak began at Laurel on March 13, the same race Ness claimed his former charge back for $7,500. Ness had purchased Kerness K as a yearling for $70,000 out of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall sale and sent him out for six starts at 2, resulting in two wins and three thirds, two of the thirds in Delaware Park stakes (the Dover and First State Dash). His only off-the-board finish came in the Maryland Million Nursery. In the final start of his juvenile campaign, the gelding was claimed, for $40,000, by Brittany Russell for Gary Aisquith, for whom he raced until the most recent claim.
The current streak includes daylight victories in Laurel starter races in March, April and May. He is 5-for-7 this year, and has eight wins and four thirds in 16 career starts, for earnings of $197,085. Bred by Bowman & Higgins Stable, he is out of the Fitzhugh LLC-bred No Picnic, a Maryland-bred daughter of Robert E. Meyerhoff's homebred Grade 1-winning Maryland-bred millionaire Include.
