Heavy-hitters Just Philtored and Slewperstitus, facing each other for the fifth time in their short careers, lined up against three others in the $125,000 Miss Disco Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on Saturday, July 11 at Colonial Downs. The ending of the seven-furlong stakes restricted to Maryland or Virginia-bred or-sired runners, delayed a week due to the brutal 4th of July heat, provided plenty of fireworks.
At the top of the stretch things were unfolding as expected, with Slewperstitus swooping up on the outside of frontrunner Just Philtored as the two favorites battled for home, leaving the others in their wake. Just Philtored looked strongest, and Slewperstitus was not ready to concede defeat -- but coming up the rail with renewed energy was Cathy Denelsbeck and Kelly Deiter's Irish Jig.
After appearing to be done in upper stretch, Sonny Leon put Irish Jig in a drive. Still with plenty to do as the wire loomed, the Maryland-bred daughter of former Maryland sire Irish War Cry was relentless. In a three-horse photo finish, Irish Jig -- fourth choice in the field of five -- got her nose in front, taking the head-bob over Slewperstitus, as Just Philtored finished a neck back in third.
The Deiter-trained filly recorded her first stakes victory in her fourth career start. After running six furlongs in her previous outings, she stretched out to stop the clock in 1:21.99, off solid fractions of :22.96, :45.60 and 1:09.16 set by Just Philtored. "The added distance helped her a lot," said Leon, who was aboard for the first time. "This is a nice, classy filly."
Irish Jig has two wins and $126,560 in earnings. Unraced at 2, she finished second in her career debut at Laurel in April before dominating by eight and a quarter lengths in a Delaware Park maiden special weight in May. Her stakes debut came against stiff competition when she was sent to Saratoga on June 4 for the Jersey Girl, in which she was never a factor and finished fifth.
Bred by Bell Gable Stable, Irish Jig is the third winner of three starters out of the Yes It's True mare Contradance. The mare was sold for $1,000, in foal to Hoppertunity, at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December mixed sale.
