The first foal for Maryland-bred multiple stakes winner Coconut Cake sold for $335,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s select yearling sale in Saratoga on the evening of Tuesday, Aug. 11. The chestnut son of Vekoma, named Kringle, was consigned by Northview Stallion Station (David Wade), agent for breeders Charles and Cynthia McGinnes, who also bred his dam.

“He is a beautiful colt,” said Cynthia McGinnes. “We were lucky to breed to Vekoma at a reasonable stud fee [$12,500 in 2024, with his first crop just-turned 2-year-olds]. Of course he then was leading first-crop and second-crop sire and is on his way as leading third-crop sire. His 2026 stud fee was $100,000.”

The McGinneses bred Coconut Cake, a daughter of the late Northview stallion Bandbox, and sold her as a yearling for $30,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling sale. Tim Keefe bought her and trained the gray through 27 starts over four seasons for himself and partners N R S Stable and James Chambers.

Coconut Cake didn’t make her debut until May of her 3-year-old season, then proceeded to rattle off four wins in her first six starts. She was multiple stakes-placed at 4 and broke through with a stakes win in the 2022 Maryland Million Ladies at 5. The next summer she added a Jameela Stakes win to her record. Retired with career earnings of $346,223, she was purchased privately by the McGinneses and returned to her birthplace.

“The best part is that we bred his three dams listed on the catalog page, which sort of represents all of our years at Thornmar,” noted McGinnes of their sales yearling.

The family line traces back to Muffies Muffin, a Lord Gaylord mare the couple purchased in early 1991 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic February mixed sale while carrying her third foal. Muffies Muffin produced a total of 13 foals – among her nine winners are graded winner Wicapi, a son of Waquoit who earned $671,616, and stakes winners All the Marbles (Caveat), Col. Ralph (Baederwood) and Cranberry Muffin (Shelter Half). All were by Maryland stallions. Cranberry Muffin is the Vekoma colt’s third dam.
