Canadian Jal Dastur's 4-year-old homebred gelding Thundering cruised home as the 1-10 favorite in the $125,000 Find Stakes, restricted to runners bred or sired in Virginia or Maryland on Saturday, Aug. 15 at Colonial Downs.
Trained by Derek Ryan and ridden by Paco Lopez, Thundering looked to be a force to be reckoned with when morning-line favorite Gigante scratched. He tracked in third behind the pace set by longshot Likeike, who completed the opening quarter-mile in :22.66 and half-mile in :46.78 before dropping back to last.
Turning for home, Thundering turned it on. Ahead by three lengths at the top of the stretch, he was wrapped up as he swept under the wire, winning by three and three-quarter lengths, and stopping the clock for the mile and a sixteenth on the firm turf in a solid 1:41.69. Virginia-bred Green Beans finished second over 25-1 longshot Wicked Prankster (by Mosler), the latter the 2022 and 2023 Maryland Million Turf winner making his second start following a two-year absence.
Third in his last start, the Grade 2 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 18, Thundering won the $125,000 Japan Racing Association Turf Cup at Laurel Park in June. This is by far his best season, as the son of Mosler has three wins, a second and two thirds in seven starts while earning $230,800 of his career total $361,418.
Ryan told Patrick Moquin of the Daily Racing Form that Thundering will be targeting the Maryland Million Turf, to be run Oct. 24 at Laurel.
A stakes winner at 2 when he broke his maiden in his second start by taking the $125,000 Display Stakes at Woodbine, Thundering finished second by a nose in Delaware Park's $150,000 Kent Stakes last year, while also running second in Woodbine's Toronto Cup Stakes.
The flashy bay is one of five six-figure earners, and only stakes winner, from eight starters out of Keep Right, a daughter of Street Cry (Ire) purchased by Country Life Farm for $50,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton New York Fall Mixed sale. In 2019, Keep Right produced One Silk Stocking, a Lord Nelson filly who finished third in the 2024 All Brandy. Thundering is a full-brother to $265,371-earner Pay Zone.
With Thundering in utero, Keep Right sold for $2,500 to Dastur at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December sale. Thundering is her last Maryland foal, as Dastur foaled the mare in Kentucky twice before selling her for $90,000 at this year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February mixed sale in foal to Omaha Beach.
