Cathy Denelsbeck and Kelly Lynn Deiter's 3-year-old filly Irish Jig went off the longest shot in the field of five sent out in the $125,000 Tax Free Shopping Distaff Handicap and swept past her older rivals to win by two and a quarter lengths on Friday, Sept. 11, at Delaware Park.
The field broke from the gate as a group and remained tightly bunch before Vincent Cheminaud allowed Irish Jig to drift back to last. As favorite Dwelling Legacy clocked an opening quarter in :22.77 and a half in :46.45, Irish Jig was in the clear on the outside and ready to make her move rounding the far turn.
Going widest of all, the daughter of Irish War Cry was one of four across the track at the top of the stretch with a chance. Last year's Maryland-bred champion 3-year-old filly Onyx Ten looked ready to take command, but Irish Jig surged past and quickly pulled away, covering the six furlongs in 1:11.61 over the fast main track.
Recording her second stakes win of the year, Irish Jig now has three wins and a second in six starts, while banking $214,060.
Based with Deiter at Delaware Park, Irish Jig didn't start at 2 and was shipped to Laurel this past April to make her debut, running second in a six-furlong maiden special weight. She scored big next out, by eight and a quarter lengths, in a Delaware Park maiden special weight in May at the same distance.
Her stakes debut came at Saratoga on June 4 in the Jersey Girl, but she was never a factor and finished fifth.
Deiter took her to Colonial Downs for the Maryland/Virginia restricted Miss Disco Stakes at seven furlongs and it proved a success, as she won a three-way photo in a head bob over even-money favorite Slewperstitus. A try against a loaded field in the Charles Town Oaks-G2 in late August was a bust as she finished far back.
Bred by Bell Gable Stable, Irish Jig is the third winner from three starters out of the winning Yes It's True mare Contradance. After producing Irish Jig, the mare sold that December for $1,000, in foal to Hoppertunity, at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic mixed sale and delivered her next two foals in Alabama.
