Kerness K earned his 10th straight win, dating back to March of this year, on Thursday, Sept. 17, in a six-furlong starter dirt sprint at Delaware Park, holding his position as the winningest horse in the nation this year.
Racing for Morris Kernan and trainer Jamie Ness's Jagger Inc., with Martin Chuan aboard, the 4-year-old son of Great Notion went off the 4-5 favorite in the seven-horse field. Trailing far back early, nearly a dozen lengths off the pace, he rallied on the turn, closed strongly in the lane, and drew off to win by three and a quarter lengths while stopping the clock in 1:10.61.
Kerness K's streak began at Laurel on March 13, the same race Ness claimed him back for $7,500. Since then, all his starts have been starter allowances or handicaps. In his previous outing on Aug. 22, he scored by a nose in a $50,000 handicap on Claiming Crown Showcase Day at Colonial Downs, earning an automatic qualification for the Claiming Crown Ready's Rocket Express, to be run at Churchill Downs on Nov. 14.
His record now stands at 13 wins and four thirds in 21 career starts for $321,585 in total earnings.
Bowman & Higgins Stable bred Kerness K out of the Include mare No Picnic. He was sold as a yearling for $70,000 at the 2023 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale, with Jagger making the purchase. Twice stakes-placed at 2 at Delaware Park, Kerness K was risked for $40,000 in December 2024, where trainer Brittany Russell dropped the slip for owner Gary Aisquith. Off for 10 months, he returned in allowance company last October, winning first time back, before dropping into claiming races at the start of this year.
No Picnic produced a colt by Cupid named Direct Exit in 2025, who sold for $20,000 this past August in a Fasig-Tipton digital sale. The mare delivered a Great Notion filly on May 2 and was bred back to Post Time for 2027.
