The 41st running of the Geisha Stakes will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9 at Laurel Park. Nine fillies and mares have been nominated to the one-mile main track test worth $100,000 for Maryland-bred and sired fillies, or $75,000 for Maryland-bred runners.

Merriefield Farm’s Foyle fought off a stretch-long challenge from Delta Park to win the $35,000 Pennsylvania Hunt Cup on Sunday, Nov. 3, and lock up the 2013 timber championship.
On Jan. 25, 2014, Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis will host thousands of warm-hearted Plungers for an experience that has become a winter tradition in Maryland. Once again, Team Jim McKay Maryland Million Day will show their support for Special Olympics Maryland by wading into the icy waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

The release of the Jockey Club’s Report of Mares Bred (RMB) statistics for the 2013 breeding season included the top 10 states and provinces by number of mares reported bred. While Maryland did not appear in the top 10, stallions in the state in 2013 bred more mares than in the previous year. Of the top 10 states, only Kentucky, Oklahoma and Texas showed increases.
Sylvia E. Heft’s Eighttofasttocatch took his second Maryland Million Classic in three years with a gate-to-wire effort under Forest Boyce in the $150,000 mile and an eighth stakes. The son of Not For Love trained by Tim Keefe was never threatened as he recorded his 13th career victory from 29 starts, and boosted his lifetime earnings to $794,585. Read more...

Merriefield Farm’s Foyle defied his 11-1 betting odds and won the $50,000 International Gold Cup by one length at Great Meadow Race Course in The Plains, Va., on Saturday, Oct. 19. Kieran Norris was in the saddle for trainer Bruce Fenwick.
Chris Sobocinski at Delaware Park has reported that multiple stakes winner Wide Country passed away on Monday, Oct. 7 at the farm where she enjoyed her retirement years in Middletown, Del. She was 25.

Catherine H. Robinson is the winner of the inaugural Joe Kelly Unsung Hero award. Better known as Holly, she has been involved with Thoroughbred horses since she was a teenager and went to work for Mikey Smithwick on his farm in Hydes, Md.
A total of 118 pre-entries, barring late mail or emails after regular business hours on closing day, Thursday, Oct. 17, were named to the nine stakes races which comprise the 2013 Jim McKay Maryland Million. The 28th running of the event will take place at Laurel Park next Saturday, Oct. 19. First post is 12:15 p.m.
Keystone Thoroughbreds’ Crossing Again scored a breakthrough victory when the 11-year-old mare led throughout the $25,000 Genesee Valley Hunt Cup and won by 3 1/2 lengths on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Award Wanted picked up her first stakes win on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Laurel Park, winning the Geisha with a rail-skimming rally.
