89th Annual Yearling Show
Sunday, July 23 • 9 am
Maryland State Fairgrounds • Timonium
Judge: Ned Allard
The Maryland Horse Breeders Association’s 89th annual Yearling Show has been scheduled for Sunday, July 23 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium. |
Beginning in 1932 as a showcase for Maryland breeders' yearlings, the show was first held on the lawn in front of the old Pimlico Clubhouse. In 1960, the show was moved to the State Fairgrounds in Timonium, and has been held there since. Twenty-six Hall of Fame trainers are counted among our past judges, including Triple Crown-winning trainers Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, Max Hirsch, Lucien Laurin and Triple Crown-winning Billy Turner judged the show in 1977, the day after Seattle Slew won the Preakness. Alfred G. Vanderbilt remains the leading owner of yearling show champions, his Sagamore Farm winning seven shows—the first coming in 1934 and the last in 1967. The most successful sire of champions in the yearling show’s history is Alfred G. Vanderbilt’s Discovery, the sire of five champions over seven years.

The MHBA Yearling Show is open to all yearlings eligible for Maryland-bred registration. Usually held on the fourth Sunday in June, it is judged by a well-known national trainer invited by the Yearling Show Committee.
There are four classes. One for Maryland-sired colts and geldings (may be split evenly by date of birth after entries are closed), one for Maryland-sired fillies (maybe split evenly by date of birth after entries are closed), out-of-state-sired colts and geldings, out-of-state-sired fillies.
Most importantly, in addition to prize money distributed the day of the show, all horses exhibited are eligible for the Yearling Show Purse Awards, totaling $40,000.
There are two opportunities to win these purse awards.
A $40,000 MHBA Yearling Show purse will be split and distributed twice:
$20,000 will go to the top four money-winners* racing as 2-year-olds and another $20,000 will be awarded the following year to the four highest-earning* 3-year-old performers.
